A Safe Procedure in a Comfortable Setting
Getting a tooth extracted sounds scary, especially if you’ve never gotten one before. It’s important to know that it’s a routine, low-risk procedure that is relatively painless. The recovery after a tooth extraction is usually very simple.
Advantage Dental Group can handle some extractions in our office, but we may refer you to an oral surgeon in some situations.
Why Do I Need a Tooth Extraction?
The most common extraction procedure is wisdom teeth removal and it is typically handled by an oral surgeon. If your wisdom teeth are impacted it can stop your teeth from growing in correctly.
Oftentimes, a dentist will recommend a tooth extraction to make room in the mouth for proper tooth alignment. In other cases, a tooth needs to be extracted when it is badly damaged or decayed. An extraction will prevent infection and relieve pain.
What Happens After a Tooth Extraction?
Once the procedure is completed, your dentist will be sending you home with instructions to teach you how to properly care for the extraction site in the hours and days following tooth removal. Some patients will have to cover the area with gauze.
If needed, the dentist or oral surgeon may prescribe medicine to give some relief in the days following the procedure. The gums should fully heal in a matter of weeks, as long as the site is kept clean. Once healed, you may be interested in replacing the missing tooth with an implant, bridge, or denture.
